Revelations from Ken Burns’ New Series on PBS (American Issues Take Two)
American Bigotry Right Through the War. The hosts for this show are Jay Fidell and Tim Apicella. The guest is Cynthia Lee Sinclair.
Ken Burns new series ‘Yearning to Breathe Free’ on PBS is a stunning examination of bigotry right here at home in the years before, during and after World War II. It’s a three-part series that covers the evolution and impact of anti-semitism in the U.S. during the 1930s and 1940s, and how many Americans and American government officials supported Hitler and Facism in those years, even while Hitler was executing his anti-semitic campaigns in Germany and in the countries he took over during the war, and even while the Jews in those countries were losing all their rights, businesses and property and ultimately their lives in the death camps and otherwise (2/3rd of the Jews in Europe were murdered during the war) . Why didn’t America care? Why didn’t it offer visas to people whose lives hung in the balance? What is it about the American character that let this happen? Have we lost our morality/. Are we seeing the same thing today?
