We talk with Susan Helms about her journey from young artist to flight test engineer to astronaut to Air Force General. What were the figments that allowed her to dream big, fly to space five times, set the record for the longest spacewalk. While participating in ISS Expedition 2, she and Jim Voss conducted an 8-hour and 56-minute spacewalk, the world record for the longest spacewalk.
Helms left NASA in 2002 to return to the Air Force, the chief of the space superiority division of the Space Command in Colorado Springs. In 2011 she was promoted to lieutenant general and became commander of both the 14th Air Force of the Air Force Space Command and the Joint Functional Component Command for Space at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Helms retired from the Air Force in 2014.
