Hello Japan Tourism Restarts (Looking to the East)
Japan is Open for Tourism once Again. The host for this show is Stephen Zurcher. The guest is Eric Johnston.
In today’s show, we explore the reopening of Japan to foreign tourism once again after over two and a half years of nearly zero inbound tourism due to COVID immigration restrictions in the country. Foreign tourists, including many from Hawaii, are returning to Japan now albeit in still small numbers compared to 2019 when over 30 million foreign tourists came to the country. We explore the reopening of Japan with Eric Johnston who is Deputy Editor for the Japan Times, which is the most influential English-based new publication in Japan. Eric covers politics in Japan plus other topics including Hospitality. He joins us from Niseko in Hokkaido Japan, which is preparing now for the return of foreign tourists for the winter skiing season.
