Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and its sister companies are the only providers of grid electric power in the Hawaiian Islands. So the company has a responsibility of stewardship to all citizens and businesses, and invests continuously in technology innovation, education and infrastructure in order to keep up with fast-moving changes in the energy landscape. This program considers the role of many forms renewable energy in Hawaii’s energy future, as envisioned by HECO, from solar (which makes all the headlines) to wind, ocean, biomass, hydro, geothermal, fuel cells. The key role played by HECO in the State’s declared goals for energy independence is examined. There is also discussion of the intricate energy ecology that HECO balances with hydrocarbon providers from Asia, and the network of international relationships that HECO maintains.
