Climate Action for Marine Monuments -Dan Polhemus, PhD (USFWS) & Keola Lindsey (OHA)
Papahānaumokuākea Marine national monument is the single largest conservation area under the U.S. flag, and one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. The Monument contains numerous islands and atolls and covers 140,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean, an area larger than all the country’s national parks combined. It was established in 2006, “To forever protect and perpetuate ecosystem health and diversity and Native Hawaiian cultural significance of Papahanaumokuakea.”
