Captain Donald Edward Koelper, Who Served As Advisor To The South Vietnamese 4th Marine Battalion
On 16 February 1964, Captain Donald E. Koelper’s timely intervention disrupted a Viet Cong terrorist bombing that targeted American civilian and military personnel at the Kinh Do Theatre in Saigon, South Vietnam. He ignored the threat to his own personal safety and saved scores of American lives, albeit at the cost of his own.As American involvement in the war escalated, hundreds of thousands of arriving soldiers were processed at the U.S. military’s Koelper Compound in Saigon, which had been renamed in his honor.
