Can Psychology Explain the Israel-Hamas War (Keeping the World Company)
Can These Tools Make Peace Possible. The hosts for this show are Jay Fidell and Tim Apicella. The guest is Jean Rosenfeld.
When religion becomes the underlying factor in military conflict, then the utilitarian rules by which policy is made and negotiations are started, often do not apply. Our panel refers to an opinion piece by Nafees Hamid regarding the psychology of conflict that acknowledges some of the basic findings of the history of religions, including concepts of: parochial altruism: with us or against us; sacred values: never compromise; trauma and victimhood: the past is never past; and the way forward: and thankfully, the tools exist in psychological literature.
Should these psychological factors be taken into consideration when religion and ideology become the independent variables in the equations of political violence. Our panel also discusses the work of social psychologists Milgram and Zimbardo to help us understand why ordinary good people become violent or support violent sociopolitical regimes.
