Attorney Mitchell Imanaka has been active in representing developers, lenders and others who participate in the development industry for 38 years. Mitch and Jay discuss changes in the industry and how Imanaka Asato has positioned itself to best serve its clients.
Mr. Imanaka has been active in representing developers, lenders and others who participate in the development industry for 38 years. He has served as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law in the area of real estate development and finance, and has also served as a consultant to the State of Hawaii on subdivision and timeshare issues since 1983.
Mr. Imanaka is a past chair of the Real Property and Financial Services Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association, and served for eight years as a real estate commissioner, in which capacity he served as vice chair of the Commission and chair of the Condominium Review Committee of the Commission. During his tenure on the Commission, Mr. Imanaka also served as chair of the Blue Ribbon Condominium Recodification Advisory Committee, which helped draft Hawaii’s condominium law, adopted in 2006.
An author of many articles on development issues and frequent speaker, Mr. Imanaka is co-editor of the Hawaii Real Estate Law Manual, Volumes I – IV, the definitive work on real property law in Hawaii, first published in 1997, with the last volume in 2013. He is the author of the chapter 8 in Volume II, titled “Condominiums, Coops and Planned Unit Developments.” Mr. Imanaka earned his B.A. degree, valedictorian, from the University of Hawaii, and his J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
Mr. Imanaka is a member of the Hawaii State, American (member, Business Law, Real Property Probate and Trust Law sections) and Inter-Pacific (vice-chair, Committee on Legal Practice) bar associations, the Urban Land Institute (full member and Hawaii Executive Committee member), the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (Hawaii Board member since 2002 and Chapter President, 2011), the American Resort Development Association (trustee, chair, ARDA Hawaii, 1997 – 2005, 2008 – 2009; national board of directors and national chair, State Legislative Committee, 2003 to 2008), the International Research Foundation (director, 1994 to present), the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council (vice president and director), The Counselors of Real Estate (member, 2010 and 2013 Chair, Hawaii Chapter) and the Hawaii Association of Realtors. He is also a past-president of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise, and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
Mr. Imanaka was named a Super Lawyer in 2009 – 2015 for Hawaii in real estate law. He received the Hawaii State Bar Association’s Ikena Award for outstanding service to the public and legal profession in September 2009.
