A Return to Japanese American Camps (The Creative Life)
Japanese American Camp Internment. The hosts for this show are Darlene Boyd and Kelly Oto. The guests are Kimiko Marr and Glenn Yabuno.
February 19, The Day of Remembrance marks the anniversary of the 1942 Presidential signing of Order 9066. This order interned people of Japanese descent in over 10 relocation centers. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, 120,000 men, women and children across the west coast were under suspicion of disloyalty. They were forcibly relocated to internment camps thereby stripping them of all they owned.
Many internees did not speak about the camps. They took the stance of shikata ga nai or, it cannot be helped. Internees faced this atrocity with gaman enduring incarceration with patience, restraint and perseverance. Very few internees are still living but there are those keeping this injustice alive through camp pilgrimages.
Kimiko Marr–Executive Director of Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages–and Glenn Yabuno share their camp pilgrimage healing experiences in building a generational bond of the Japanese American experience. Kelly Oto, daughter of an internee, joins our guests.
