Trump’s Changes to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid (American Issues Take One)
Trump’s Changes to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid; Cuts to Entitlement Programs will Impact MAGA Voter (American Issues Take One). The hosts for this show were Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guests were Benjamin Davis and Chuck Crumpton.
The discussion was: Trump’s campaign to cut two trillion dollars out of the budget will include cuts to the social safety net programs such as Social Security (SS), Medicare, and Medicaid. Over 71.6 million Americans currently draw Social Security benefits. In 2023, SS and Medicare accounted for 34% of the national budget. Trump’s campaign rhetoric of proposed cuts caught the attention of the media and the Harris/Walz campaign. However, talk of proposed cuts had little impact on the 2024 election results. In President George Bush’s Jr second term, he attempted to sell Americans a plan to allow accumulated individual Social Security funds to be invested in the stock market. Bush traveled around the country to gather support. After months, his plan descended to the ground with a loud thud. Americans were risk adverse and preferred the current method of calculated benefit payouts for retirees. The panel will discuss what form of program budget cuts to SS, Medicare, and Medicaid may look like, and who will most likely be impacted.
The takeaway was: With no specific policy information of how SS, Medicare, Medicaid cuts may impact existing retirees or soon to be retired Americans, the pending program cuts has created great amounts of concern. Many of those potentially impacted are MAGA voters. Did these Trump supporters realize their vote may end up in cuts which goes directly against their personal financial interests?
