United Nations’ input in Sierra Leone. The host for this episode is Jay Fidell. The guest for this episode is Leila Katšajeva.

Transitional justice can take many shapes and forms. Some think that it is best served on the local level through domestic criminal proceedings and domestic stakeholders. That is because the latter are seen to be more aware of the history, culture, language, and legal traditions of the country in transition, and thus able to better accommodate its needs. While it is hard to disagree with, there are situations when the intervention of the international community is crucial. That is mostly when the countries that have suffered from mass scale atrocities are unable to administer justice independently due to the lack of resources, or when these countries are unwilling to prosecute the violators domestically.

To explain how transitional justice is administered by international organizations, we use an example of the United Nations peacekeeping mission pre, during and post civil war in Sierra Leone.
