Why exclude these players. What is Trump’s plan. Why did Hegseth and Vance give away Ukraine’s negotiation points before the meeting. What is Zelensky’s reaction to this affront. What is Europe’s reaction. Will Europe form a new security agreement without Trump. What does this tell them about Trump’s bona fides in this meeting and these negotiations. How can the resulting agreement provide meaningful security for Ukraine and an opportunity for Ukraine to join NATO. What role would the US and Europe play in keeping the peace. Can there be an agreement for a peace when neither Ukraine nor Europe are parties? Will any such peace be sustainable and durable.
The takeaway was: Trump’s foreign policy seems completely rudderless and an ongoing insult to our long standing allies. We need to watch him carefully, because his efforts at direct negotiations may blow up in his face and in the faces of all the nations involved.
