The Rise of the American Reich; The Potential for Unprecedented Power (Keeping the World Company). The hosts for this show were Jay Fidell and Tim Apicella. The guests were Jean Rosenfeld and Manfred Henningsen.

The discussion was: We need to understand the potential for unprecedented power under Trump’s return to the presidency. See Arthur Schlesinger’s ‘imperial presidency,’ highlighted during Nixon’s administration. While past presidents have expanded their powers through military engagements and executive actions, Trump’s is more potent due to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Trump v. United States.

Trump’s vision, as laid out in Project 25, proposes significant changes: dismantling cabinet departments, removing civil servants, and bolstering the president’s appointment powers without oversight. These things depart from conventional checks and balances that uphold democratic governance.

Trump’s appointment of an Attorney General loyal solely to him and manipulation of military and law enforcement further signal a shift toward authoritarianism. In authoritarian regimes in history, leaders consolidated power, marginalized the judiciary, and directed the military and police for domestic control.

Concerns arise about Trump’s disregard for constitutional limits, such as term restrictions and conducting fair elections. Aligning with Christian nationalist movements, Trump’s coalition could enable rapid, fascistic transformations, invoking scholar Robert Paxton’s observations on fascism’s swift impact.

If Trump begins detaining immigrants or targeting political rivals, it would mark a significant authoritarian shift akin to the dark historical precedents of 20th-century Europe.

The takeaway was: We need to understand the potential for unprecedented power under Trump’s return to the presidency.
