The Hidden Diamond at Hamilton Library, UH Manoa; Russian Bibliographer, Patricia Polansky (Journeys of the Mind). The host for this show was Carl Ackerman. The guest was Patricia Polansky.

The discussion was: As Patricia Polansky has been devoted to Russian Studies at UH Manoa for over half a century, we hope to uncover the many things she has accomplished in the Russian field. She has written extensively in the field, spent time both in Russia and the former Soviet Union, has guided professors (of the stature of John White, John Stephan, Larry Hein, Nicholas Riasanovsky, and Donald Treadgold) around the world, and has helped make UH Manoa a major center for Russian archival work, most specifically in the Russian Pacific region, despite the pressures of the Hawaii and UH state bureaucracy, and the constant threat of legislative budget cuts. We will discuss her accomplishments in the Russian field and will also talk about the quite prestigious Medal of Pushkin given to Polansky by the long time Russian diplomat Sergei Victorovich Lavrov (November 11, 2011) and by the Ambassador of Russia, Sergey L. Kislyak, who came to Hamilton library to deliver this prize. This cultural and educational award is rarely given to an American; as of the time of Polansky’s award of the 650 awards given by Russian government, only 2 went to Americans.

The takeaway was: All will come to find out that hidden (like a diamond) in the upper reaches of Hamilton Library, on the University of Hawaii campus,is a resource person who cannot only help the people of Hawai’i shine a light about everything Russia, but Patricia Polansky can radiate the culture of Europe in addition. We will all learn to appreciate this librarian and author who truly is a Renaissance Woman.
