Sending Away our Best and Brightest to an American Diaspora (Keeping the World Company)
Sending Away our Best and Brightest to an American Diaspora
; America’s Move from Enlightenment to a New Dark Age (Keeping the World Company). The hosts for this show were Jay Fidell and Tim Apicella. The guests were Benjamin Davis, Jean Rosenfeld and Manfred Henningsen.
The discussion was: Our panel discusses Trump’s Relentless moves to suppress and terminate funding for intellectual, scientific and medical study and research in the United States, and his inexplicable punishment and destruction of federal funding and programs that make that possible, and the resultant departure, voluntary or involuntary, of brilliant and productive scholars, faculty and graduate students. These include not only immigrants but also permanent residents and citizens. Many of these have left the country or will leave the country for more sympathetic scientific and research communities elsewhere, including Canada, Europe and Asia. There is no price that can be set on the value of their contributions to our national development, economy and quality of life. What short term and long term damages and effects will this have on our academic and research communities and critical research and development initiatives. What benefits will their departure provide to other countries, including our competitors and rivals. How will this change our place on the world. What reasons has Trump given for these actions, and are any of them valid or defensible. What is the relationship between. this and his tariff and trade wars. Will these scientists and researchers some back to work in the US in the future, and how hard will it be for us to resurrect or recreate their careers, and their institutions and programs if and when they do.
The takeaway was: Part of America’s historical success is the intellectual, scientific and medical study and research that has been done, much of it made possible by funding from the federal government. Those programs are now being destroyed by the Trump administration, and the individuals involved are leaving their fields and/or leaving the country. The destruction is enormous and profound, and we need to find out why Trump is bent on doing this and what he hopes to achieve.
