Of What Value Is Education Research? (The State Of The State Of Hawaii)
How We Know Teaching Produces Learning. The host for this episode is Stephanie Dalton. The guest for this episode is Hector Rivera, PhD.
Dr. Hector Rivera who has studied diverse students’ learning across the nation and internationally will discuss findings of foundational research studies of Hawaiian family life, culture and community. Findings showed students could be successful at home performing complex tasks and unsuccessful performing classroom learning activities. He describes the relevance of such findings and their influence on continued inquiry for multicultural and English Learner student populations. Numerous Hawaii entities, such as Kamehameha Schools, University of Hawaii Curriculum Research and Development Group (CRDG) and other research-based programs worked for decades to produce a body of knowledge and know-how for assisting diverse learners and teaching in culturally responsive ways. Dr. Rivera will explain how his notion of four pillars: teachers, school leadership, students, parents, are a means to convey key findings to those assisting students.
