Maritime Security in Western Pacific; What Are its Implications for US Hegemony There (Global Connections). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Carl Baker.

The discussion was: Carl Baker, senior advisor to Pacific Forum, helps us understand the current issues and the geographical areas in play in the competition for maritime control and security in the Western Pacific. What is China doing, and why. How big is its Navy now. What is the American presence there now and how committed is the US to providing security for the other nations in the Western Pacific. What is the role and involvement of Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. What are the stakes for the US, for China and for these other countries. To what extent do those stakes involve the future of global trade. How does Trump’s tariffs and trade war affect security policy in that area.

The takeaway was: The US must stay alert on maritime security issues in the Western Pacific in order to protect US and global trade, so we need to have a significant presence there and stay current on what is happening and likely to happen there.
