True Stories of Hawaii Activism and the Struggle for Justice. The guest is Gary Kubota, whose play Legend Of Koʻolau is returning to the Doris Duke Theatre in Honolulu this Saturday and Sunday. Most people know Mr. Kubota as an award-winning writer with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and other Hawaii newspapers. He was also a community activist, working with the group “Kokua Hawaii” to successfully fight several evictions in minority communities in the early 1970s. His book, “Hawaii Stories of Change,” published last year, documented Kokua Hawaii’s work, including its effort to save the Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaii. This year, after his retirement from the Star-Advertiser, Kubota successfully helped a Lahaina community receive support to pass a bill to stop an eviction of 250 tenants. This week, the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs passed a resolution honoring Kokua Hawaii for helping to lay the foundation of the Hawaiian Renaissance and also recognizing its late founder, Lawrence Kamakawiwoole, for his humanitarian work. The host for this episode is John Waihee. The guest for this episode is Gary Kubota.
