Kim Coco Iwamoto Unseats House Speaker Scott Saiki; How will this Change Things in the Legislature (Community Matters). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Vicky Cayetano.

The discussion was: In a tight and contentious District 25 race, Kim Coco Iwamoto has unseated House Speaker Scott Saiki, who has served in the House since 1994 and has been speaker since May 2017. After losing to Saiki in two prior elections with less than 200 votes, Iwamoto mounted a strong campaign against him for the District 25 seat, which covers Ala Moana, Kakaako, and Downtown Honolulu. ‘I wasn’t just campaigning against him. I was campaigning against the entire Democratic establishment,’ Iwamoto told Hawaii News Now. Gov. Josh Green said his heart goes out to Saiki. ‘It will be somewhat of a shock to the system at the Legislature if the speaker doesn’t prevail,’ Green said on Saturday night. We discuss how Iwamoto finally prevailed, what new viewpoint and policies she brings to the legislature and how things will change as a result of this upset in the primary.

The takeaway was: Scott Saiki’s loss means he will no longer be speaker of the House. We need to follow what happens and how it will affect the House of Representatives and thus the Legislature.
