Honolulu’s Neighborhood Board System—the cornerstone of democracy on Oahu.

The Honolulu Neighborhood Commission office is a part of the Honolulu City and County Mayor’s Office and oversees the 33 active Neighborhood Boards and the system of elections, resources, neighborhood plan and relevant assistants and laws, like the Sunshine law, that pertain to the Neighborhood Boards. The Neighborhood boards are the basic democratic institution on Oahu where citizens can learn about issues, crime statistics, bring complaints, share ideas and meet with leaders and their representatives on the local and state level to express concerns relevant to them in an open forum.

Today we will talk with representatives from the Neighborhood Commission to find out more about the history and mission of the Neighborhood Commission and Boards, how the structure works, the Neighborhood Plan, and how to participate in the process as a citizen and how run for a local seat. The host for this episode is Winston Welch. The guests for this episode are Shawn Hamamoto, James Skizewski.
