Conscious Drilling is Critical. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Nicole Lautze.

Water and energy are critical resources to our state. Both are threatened by climate change. UH is conducting two 5+ year-long projects on geothermal and groundwater resources. The groundwater project discovered more groundwater on Hawaii Island than current models account for and a refinement of aquifer boundaries is in order. How such results extend to other islands remains largely unexplored. The geothermal-focused project expanded understanding of groundwater location and quality, collected data in support of residual heat and/or magmatic degassing into groundwater on each island, and measured elevated groundwater temperatures to a depth of 3500 feet. Geothermal has potential to displace Hawaii’s current ~70% reliance on fossil fuels, at a cost to the state of $3B annually. Surface geophysics and small footprint drilling of deep wells will help understand both groundwater and geothermal resources statewide.
