How Green Infrastructure can be used in problems such as the proposed Ala Wai Watershed Project. Green infrastructure (GI) are man-made designs that provide social, economic and environmental benefits when managing for urban runoff. There are a myriad of designs focusing on water storage, recharge, filtering and separating as well as water reuse for energy food and ecosystem services. Under the Clean Water Act, MS4, and NPDES compliance our state government and municipalities are encouraged to adopt Low Impact Development designs such as Green Infrastructure but our City and County are playing catch up in adopting such designs and have shown to improperly manage their current cannal and stormwater systems. Local planning projects such as the Ala Wai Flood Mitigation Project and others should therefore be encouraged to adopt current sustainable practices such as Green Infrastructure and stop investing in outdated infrastructure that has shown to cost us in the long run.
