Jalousies, Fuel-Free Ventilation. From the 1940s into the 1970s, buildings of all kinds in Hawaii used jalousie (louvered) windows. Low-tech in construction and perfectly adapted to a tropical climate, jalousies seemed to be everywhere in the Hawaiian Islands. Increased use of air conditioning has wiped out jalousies, and our reliance on fossil fuels continues.
