Daily Advisory 7/4/18
We need to remember the 4th of July in the way that 19th Century American Poet Emma Lazarus did. “The New Colossus” is the name of the sonnet Emma Lazarus wrote in 1883 to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. In 1903, the poem was cast onto a bronze plaque and mounted on the pedestal’s lower level. It’s an amazing and powerful statement of what America has stood for, and seems more and more appropriate, and touching, in these very difficult times.
Here is the poem:
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.”Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Dave Stevens is a full-time IT Instructor at the University of Hawai’i Kapi’olani Community College, specializing in Cyber Security. Before becoming U.H. faculty, he spent 20 years as an IT consultant / contractor. His IT experience covers embedded development for cryptographic microprocessors, cyber security, cloud infrastructure architecture, project management, programming, database administration, networking, and website development. Recently he served as the University of Hawai’i Community College (UHCC) System Cyber Security Coordinator for a Dept. of Labor grant funding Cyber Security curriculum development, Cyber Workforce development, and Veterans outreach. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).
