Coconut Ratz and Kung Fu Cowboys (Perspectives on Global Justice)
Tales of a Pacific Islander’s childhood. On today’s episode of Perspectives on Global Justice, guest Jojo Peter will be sharing with our viewers his many memories from his autobiography, Coconut Ratz and Kung Fu Fighting, written with retired COE professor James Skouge. Jojo is a Micronesian National who grew up on Ettal, an atoll in the outer Mortlock Islands of Chuuk State, in the Federated States of Micronesia. He is a UH Manoa alumni who earned his PhD in special education. While in high school, he had an accident which caused him a severe spinal cord injury which resulted in quadriplegia. Jojo’s story tellings feature not only his functional ability (disability) experiences, but it also gives us a unique insight on Pacific Island cultures, filled with courage, resiliency, self-determination, gratitude, hardships, love, and lessons learned along the way.
