America’s New Reverse Brain Drain (American Issues Take One)
America’s New Reverse Brain Drain; What Effect will it Have on our Science and Economy (American Issues Take One). The hosts for this show were Tim Apicella and Benjamin Davis. The guests were Chuck Crumpton and David Larson.
The discussion was: Trump is attacking students by detention and deportation, and he’s attacking universities by terminating their federal funding and by trying to take control of their administration, departments, faculty, student admissions and curricula. As he becomes more brazen in those efforts, more faculty and more students are leaving their schools, leaving the country for Canada, Europe, Asia and elsewhere, and making arrangements to teach and attend school in other countries. What effect does this have on higher education in our country, on the faculty and students who are leaving and the schools they are leaving, and on the prospects and economic opportunities of the country itself. Where are they going to continue their work, their research and their studies. What economic and academic incentives are these countries and schools offering them. How will they support themselves. Will they be able to make new academic lives and careers there. Will this be a one way trip or will they be able to return at some point and resume their education and work in the US.
The takeaway was: There is nothing so changing as change itself, and right now, thanks to Trump’s government, our country and our world is in a dramatic and disruptive period of change. We need to follow these changes to identify and evaluate the options and opportunities available to those who need to leave for one reason or another.
